GBPHED, an educational research institute located in the doimukh of papumpare district,is just 30mins away from NERIST Nirjuly.
On 7th of October 2010, we the Degree 3rd Year(2k6) students along with 2nd year(2k7), were headed by our Professor Dr. AD Kumar to vist the above mentioned place. We started our journey at 13:45 and reached there by 14:00. It was very nice experience on the way, as the roads and environment were new to us, even the weather was very conducive.
So we met Mr.XXXXXXXXX, he was demonstrating us the various works done in the centre.
The following are the most interesting and thrilling points that we have seen:
1. Weed composte:There were three chambers made of bamboo sheets and was kept under shed.In the 1st chamber, different types of weeds and cowdung was mixed and kept for around 9 days.In the middle there was hollow tube(may be bamboo or plastic) with some pore on the surface kept for the air circulation. Some ants were also found, when asked if they harm in any way, the reply was that the temperature after the release of the methane gas would not allow them to survive. The chamber was made of bamboo because of the easy circulation of air.
After 9 days lap, the mixture was to be transferred to the next chamber.Where we see the colour of the leaves are changed to somewhat dark in colour. In this chamber, the mixtures are kept for another 7 days with same arrangement for easy availabilityof air.
After a week, they are again transferred to the last chamber for further decomposition of the dung and weeds and kept for the next 5 days.
After around 21 days, the weed composte is ready to use in the home garden and even in the agricultural field. This method is not made commercial because of the time requirement as well as space. The production seen after using the organic preparation was very high and HARMLESS, unlike grown with some chemical fertilisers, which are very harmful to our health.
2.Charcoal cake:This is made by burning some wood logs or any material which are easily flammable. They have made an arrangement, somewhat like a rectangle shape, by digging the soil upto some depth. After letting the materials to burn, they cover the open surface by a hard material like tin which would prevent the flow of the smoke and for that purpose also they sorround with soil. This would help in maintaining the stickiness to bind with the soil which will be discussed a little while later. They keep the tin closed for around 4hours(according to me,can be kept until it totally burns!!).Later the burnt material which are left, which becomes black colour, are taken out, they are called charcoal(as we all know),and are made to crush on a hard surface. Then they are allowed to mix with clayey soil(1kg of charcoal with 200gm of clay soil). With the help of some cylindrical material, the structure is made with the convenient diameter and lenght. Another important thing to consider is the holes or pores(longutudinally) to be made, such that there is easy passage of air.
The advantages of this material is they help to maintain the room temperature at higher celsius and can be utilized in the winter time as a room heater. It is portable and can be carried in any remote place.
3.Vermi composte:
4.Hedgerow plantation with multipurpose tree species
5.Wind vane
4. Rain Guage
5. Zero energy chamber:It is a chamber which is somewhat rectangle shape with double boundary/wall.The walls and the floor are made of bricks and cement. The height is upto the maker. The gap between the two walls are filled with baloo(sand). This particular structure is kept under a shade made of palm leaves(can say thatch), such that the tempearture certainly remains low.The sand is kept wet to maintain the temperature at low celsius. The space is used to store vegies for a long time, especially for the vegetable vendors. After placing the things, they are covered with a bamboo mat. This is done to avoid any attack by insects, pests, rhodents, birds and other factors.
It is a very useful and easy way to store leafy vegetables without much costs. But though it is not made commercial as the costs needed for the construction is not much affordable by the poor villagers and also it is spacious. However it is kept for the research purpose only.
6.Handi irrigation system:This is one type of traditional way of irrigation system which is used for the purpose of watering the nursery bed and agriculture field.(Lets say)The bed size is 1.2x12 square metre. It consist of a handi(earthen pot) which is placed 60cm away from bed(breadth wise) and 150 cm from the other pot i.e. each covering 150x120 square centimetre. The pot should be made with some holes such that the water flows with an ease. The capacity of the pot should be 6L.It is placed upto some depth such that soils are above the pores.6 L of water is used up 3- 4hours.So after every 4 hours the pot can be filled with the required amount of water or any liquid manure.
This kind of irrigation system helps in saving time as we donot need to go again and again for irrigating.
7.Different trellis:It is an architectural structure often used to support plants, especially climbers. They were of different types:
i)Table Top
ii)Half moon
iii)Web shape
iv)Inverted V-shape
v)Angle shape
Different types of trellis can be applied in any convenient area according to the species and the space we possess.
8.Multilayer Agroforestry system
